Science and Technology excels in The Guardian University league tables 2019

Science & Technology delivers great results in the Guardian league tables 2019.

The Guardian’s rankings were published on Tuesday 29th May and the Faculty of Science and Technology had significant success. The University also stood its ground in 9th place overall, securing another top 10 position in a national league table. Our top rankings: 

  • 5th - Maths 
  • 6th - Geography and Environmental Studies 
  • 7th - Physics  
  • 8th - Chemical Engineering 
  • 10th - Mechanical Engineering 
  • 11th - Chemistry 
  • 16th - Biosciences 
  • 18th - Computer Science 
  • 18th - Electronic and Electrical Engineering 
  • 22nd - Psychology  

The impressive results include a significant leap for Mathematics from 20th place in 2018 to 5th in 2019.  They also rank 7th for students entering into a graduate level career or further study within six months.

Dean of the Faculty, Professor Pete Atkinson says "I am very pleased to see that five of the subjects in the Faculty are placed in the top 10 in the Guardian League Table, and all nine subjects appearing in the top 20. There are also excellent scores for student experience, satisfaction with teaching, and career outcomes. This very strong result underlines the quality of the student offer across the Faculty, and is the result of the hard work of all our staff."

Lancaster Environment Centre is 6th overall for Geography and Environmental Studies and 4th for graduates entering into a graduate level career or further study within 6 months.  

The Physics Department maintain their top 10 status by ranking 7th overall and 4th for Student Satisfaction at 97%.   

The Engineering Department is 8th for Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering is 10th overall and 5th for students entering into a graduate level career or further study within six months. Electronic and Electrical Engineering is 18th.  

  • Chemistry is 11th overall and 6th for Student Satisfaction.   
  • Biosciences is 16th overall and 7th for Student Satisfaction. 
  • Computer Science is 18th.  
  • Psychology also improved significantly from 2018, moving from 40th position to 22nd. 

Overall these results reflect our reputation as an excellent Faculty for graduate prospects and high-standards of teaching.
