Email usYour BeeBox ideally wants to be placed in shade, perhaps under a bush or hedge. During our testing, we have placed BeeBoxes in long grass, home gardens and wooded areas – all colonies within these boxes have lived quite happily throughout.
Ideally your BeeBox wants to be situated on the perimeter of your garden – queen bumblebees tend to track around the edges of a space, so are more likely to find it if it’s placed there.
Currently, a BeeBox costs £60 (incl. VAT). All profit funds the ongoing research and development costs around BeeBox. The cost also reflects the many years of development that has gone into BeeBox to optimise the design to best encourage a queen bumblebee to take up residence and create her colony within.
Your BeeBox will arrive with everything you require to deploy it straight away. This includes the BeeBox top, base, connection plugs, ground anchor bolts, nesting material and full instructions for assembly and installation.
Unfortunately not! As we’re developing BeeBox for both research and commercial applications, we are unable to share the electronic files in order to protect our intellectual property (UK Registered Design Number 6415963, 6415964, 6415965, 6415966, 6415967). Purchasing a BeeBox helps us to continue to develop other areas of our research, including not-for-profit initiatives to support pollinators.
No! Once installed, your BeeBox needs no regular maintenance. We advise that you clean out your BeeBox at the beginning of autumn, when the nest is no longer occupied, and place new nesting material in your BeeBox at the start of spring.
Ideally you want to install your BeeBox at the end of summer or at the beginning of spring. This will ensure that it is available for new queen bumblebees before and after hibernation when they are on the lookout for a suitable nesting spot.
You can leave your BeeBox in the garden all year round and it will be naturally cleaned out by slugs! We recommend that you place some new nesting material (ideally dry moss) in it at the beginning of spring, before blossom appears on any trees, to encourage new nest formation.
