Physics Department

The Space & Planetary Physics (SPP) Group is based in the Physics Department at Lancaster University. Established in 1996, this team of over twenty academics, researchers and students studies the physics of the space environment, from the Sun, through interplanetary space to the atmospheres of Earth, other planets, their rings and moons. In addition to exploring the impacts of space weather on human technologies, SPP scientists undertake curiosity-driven research in the physical mechanisms the control the coupling between the planets and the interplanetary environment at Mars and the outer planets of our solar system. This is achieved via expertise in the exploitation of space- and ground-based experiments and theoretical modelling.

School of Engineering

The Nuclear Science & Engineering (NSE) Group is part of the School of Engineering at Lancaster University. This team specialises in nuclear research, including instrumentation, robotics, and chemical engineering. With expertise in nuclear instrumentation, decommissioning, and chemical processes, and a strategic location near industry leaders like Sellafield Site Ltd, the NSE Group is internationally recognised in nuclear engineering. Our research supports critical areas such as decommissioning, waste management, nuclear safety, fuel cycle development, new nuclear facilities, and more recently space weather monitoring.
