Hi! My name is Valerie, and I am a second year marketing student at Lancaster University. My modules this year include ‘Consumer Behaviour’, ‘Routes to Market’, ‘Digital Marketing’, ‘Marketing Simulation’ and ‘Quantitative/Qualitative Marketing Research’.

Outside of my studies, I'm involved in an entrepreneurial society called ‘Enactus’, whereby my team and I are in the process of developing an innovative, plastic-free alternative to traditional toothpaste. I have also recently started playing lacrosse for the university!

With this blog, I want to give you a little taste of what it is like to study marketing at Lancaster University. I hope you enjoy it!

8.25 am: As my first lecture starts at 9:00 am today, I quickly got ready, drank some coffee, and headed straight to the bus stop, which is conveniently situated a short walk away from my house. After a 20-minute ride, I arrived on campus.

9:00 am: It was time for my ‘Marketing Simulation’ lecture. At the beginning of the year, our class was divided into groups of 5 to represent a brand and compete for the largest market share in the digital marketing simulation world, Markstrat. I find this simulation game both educational and stimulating as I am able to apply my knowledge from past lectures and test different marketing strategies alongside their effects. At the end of the class, our lecturer announced this week’s winners. I was very happy to hear my team’s brand among them!

10:30 am: After an in-person lecture, I tend to stay in the Library for a few hours to catch up on my work before heading back home. I used to work a lot in my room but recently I have found that I am much more productive in the library. My course friends and I normally book a study room to have our own space to discuss upcoming coursework and brainstorm essay ideas together. My focus today was on researching for an essay for the ‘Routes to Market’ module. I have decided to write about how the UK grocery market has continued to create value for their customers during Covid-19 and still had to gather some references sources and relevant examples.

1:00 pm: Time for lunch! There are a lot of great places on campus to grab food and sit with your friends when you need a break. Greggs, Costa, Subway and Sultans are just some of the many options to choose from. Today, we enjoyed some pizza from ‘Pizzetta Republic’ next to the duck pond. Look at how cute the baby ducks are!

3:00 pm: I am back home again! After making a warm cup of tea, I was ready to start my reading for tomorrow’s Consumer Behaviour lecture; ‘The impact of fragrance on consumer choice’ – sounds interesting!

5:00 pm: As the weather was surprisingly lovely today, my housemates and I spontaneously decided to have a picnic in Williamson Park. (Fun fact: Some scenes from Peaky Blinders were filmed in this park last year!) If you are a sunset lover like me, I highly recommend you to come here for the best sunset views.
