Sustainability reporting, corporate governance and auditing

The city of London viewed from across the river

The Department of Accounting and Finance undertakes high-quality research in sustainability reporting, corporate governance and auditing. Our expertise spans both traditional and emerging aspects of governance, reinforced by close collaboration between colleagues working at the intersection of accounting, finance and regulation.

Faculty research covers a broad spectrum of topics, including:

  • executive compensation,
  • share repurchases,
  • the role of outside directors,
  • corporate misconduct,
  • the effectiveness of different governance arrangements, and
  • financial auditing.

An important and growing strand of research focuses on sustainability reporting. This work traces the evolution of policy debates in the field, ranging from early concerns about “greenwashing” to the development of the sustainability reporting standards. By examining the interaction between governance mechanisms, auditing practices, and sustainability disclosures, our research contributes to a deeper understanding of how governance frameworks shape both financial and non-financial reporting in a changing regulatory and societal environment.

Faculty members in these areas have published in world-leading accounting academic journals such as: Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Review of Accounting Studies, and Contemporary Accounting Research.

Our research in these topics attracts significant public and policy interest and is frequently featured in national and international media.
