The Once and Future Land
Dr Louise Carver, Lancaster Environment Centre,
The Once and Future Land will stage arts and research led, experimental field trips through landscapes to build literacy over the challenges and possibilities for the future of land for a mixed public of parliamentarians, policy makers, researchers, land managers, artists, civil society and industry. It will aim to make visible the interplay between land’s meaning, materiality and management at a pivotal moment in the UK’s farming and natural environment legislation which is undergoing generational changes through the Agricultural Transition Plan (2021-2024) and the new Environment Bill. The objective is to see how trans-disciplinary learning experiences can both enhance insights over the complexity of human life and environmental systems, in-situ, while developing innovative action research methods, critical pedagogy and forms of public and policy engagement. Following a number of promising partnership opportunities external to Lancaster, and cross-campus interest, Louise and Charlie are now exploring the preparation of an AHRC bid that would be rooted in curatorial and action research methods. They welcome feedback, interest and discussion over the idea.
