Although collaborative governance is advanced as necessary for the sustainable management of river basins, the empirical link between actors' participation and the ecological state of rivers remains dim. Here we explore this topic by merging social and ecological data covering over 20 yrs in France.

Speaker Lucie Baudoin is a visiting researcher in The Pentland Centre, haling from Department of Society, Politics and Sustainability, ESADE, Universidad Ramon Llull, Barcelona.

"My research endeavors originate from the following broader puzzle: « Under what conditions does ‘human’ water management lead to the sustainability of freshwater systems? »

"More precisely, I study collaborative governance institutions in charge of river basins, to understand their relation to their ecological context and to the notion of sustainability. Indeed, although collaborative processes are repeatedly advanced as necessary to achieve sustainable water management, the conceptual and empirical link between actors' participation and the sustainability of water systems remains dim.

"I explore this topic in the context of French river basin institutions, building on decades of archive data and interviews, both through quantitative and qualitative research. I notably try to link ecological and social data, in an effort of interdisciplinary research."

All students, staff and colleagues are encouraged to attend.
