How to not become an overpacker!

Some of the beautiful greenery our campus has to offer.

Welcome to Lancaster University, I am Joey, a recent graduate who studied MORSE (Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics) and I’m from County College. Like many of my friends and coursemates, I struggled with luggage packing issues before my first arrival at university three years ago, for which I would like to provide a few tips for you to avoid experiencing the same struggles as me.

First of all, there are various shops on our campus, ranging from a local to a foreign supermarket, a pharmacy, a salon, and restaurants and bars serving different cuisines from different parts of the world. Simple daily necessities can be found easily on our campus. Moreover, there are many supermarkets, and chain stores selling a large variety of products, from sports equipment, electronics, and clothing to beauty products, and you can get most groceries from the city centre.

While packing, I would suggest packing all the essential documents such as your ID and CAS into a file, which allows you to gain easy access to them upon arrival. For clothing, have more hoodies, jeans and other clothing that can help keep you warm such as coats and sweaters, since the temperature here can be quite low during winter (around 3°C to 6°C in January), also the weather often is wet and windy. If you are an overseas student like me, you may consider bringing along a power converter and an adapter to charge your electronic devices since the supply voltage here can be different from where you are from.

However, try not to pack excess bedding or kitchenware since you can easily purchase them at our university campus and in the city centre. Moreover, you can always collect second-hand kitchenware, homeware, stationery, ring binders, and textbook from the ‘Don’t Ditch It, Donate It’ project organized by Green Lancaster in Alexandra Square.

You could surely get all the necessities in Lancaster, so don’t panic and overpack! Start packing early so that you can review and remove any items that are unlikely to use and bulky. I wish you all the best of luck during your time at Lancaster!
