My first term at LUMS: Rutvi Shah

A female student

Pursuing my Masters from a university in UK seemed like a far fetched dream. Getting an offer to study at Lancaster University and eventually being considered for the academic excellence scholarship has been an absolute privilege.

I chose to study at LUMS primarily because of the quadruple accreditation, high employability, and the structure of the programme. The process that followed did not demand too much effort, because the administrative department helped me every step of the way whether it was an amendment request in the CAS letter or booking the airport shuttle service. The university made the arrangement so convenient that I had a separate taxi allotted to me which dropped me from the university to my off-campus accommodation on my first day here.

The Fresher’s Fest has to be another highlight in my journey so far. We were able to get in touch with the representatives of different societies and look around the sports centre. We also had an introduction lecture from our concerned departments which was essentially to familiarize us with the code of conduct and the agenda for the rest of the year. This lecture really set the stage, especially for international students, since it got rid of the ambiguity and made us aware of what was expected from us.

Moreover, a huge part of the Lancaster experience lies in the diversity and inclusivity practised at the campus. My class cohort has people from several different nationalities and it’s such a delight to come together with people from different backgrounds to discuss academics, business, and life. In fact, most professors also come from non-UK backgrounds and bring with them a fresh perspective which is really beneficial, especially as an International Business student.

As a part of the first term, we had to study three different modules and even though the course curriculum is really intense, the academic approach which seeks to create a balance between group and individual work is really helpful. As future managers, the art of working effectively as a team is quintessential and the programme is surely solidifying our people skills. Furthermore, the professors bring a very high level of expertise and encourage interaction at every level thereby enhancing our ability to base our opinions on evidence.

The group study spaces at the library, postgraduate study room and the graduate social hub have been my go-to places this term. Full marks to the university for creating an atmosphere that is truly conducive to learning and holistic growth.
