Message to LUMS students

Lancaster University Management School

09 December 2015

Important information for all LUMS students on coursework deadlines and rescheduling classes.

To all LUMS students

We hope you are all safe and well in the aftermath of Storm Desmond. We wanted to take the time to re-assure you that we are doing all we can to minimise disruption to your studies and to thank you for your patience and understanding whille we finalise practical arrangements relating to missed teaching and assessments.

This communication provides the overarching LUMS principles for the arrangements that will be made. In due course we will also be providing detailed information about specific modules via email/Moodle.

Please note that:

  • All communication regarding LUMS UG and PGT arrangements for missed teaching and assessments will be communicated to you via Moodle/your Lancaster email account.
  • The University will be closed over the Christmas holiday (5.00pm on 23 December until 9.00am on 4 January), but outside of the closure period please do feel free to contact staff via email and through the module Moodle pages with any further queries.

Assessment and deadlines

For any coursework assessment deadlines due between Saturday 5 December and Thursday 7 January the new deadline will be Monday 18 January (week 12) to ensure access to University resources.

For any coursework assessment deadlines due between Friday 8 January and Monday 18 January, the new deadline will be Monday 25 January (week 13).

The coursework assessment turnaround time for Management School modules will remain at 28 days, the return date for assessment submitted on Monday 18 January will be no later than Monday 15 February.

In-class tests and/or group presentations that were due to take place in week 10 will be re-scheduled within the first three weeks of Term 2 or alternative forms of assessment will be set.

For postgraduate exams that were due to take place in the week commencing 4 January (i.e. week 0), programmes will use this time for week 10 catch-up teaching and will find suitable examination dates later in the term.

Re-scheduling of classes

We are committed to making up any missed learning hours and this will be through one or both of the following ways. The details for individual modules will be communicated via Moodle and/or email:

  • Through the provision of missed materials and content and additional resources via Moodle
  • Through re-scheduled teaching (which may be on Saturdays and evenings)

In addition, for undergraduate modules, all Term 1 modules with an examination component will have a revision session scheduled after Easter.

Additional support

Academic staff will be available for consultation during their advertised weekly consultation hours (which will be re-confirmed on Moodle).

I and the Associate Deans for Teaching (Professor Niall Hayes, Associate Dean for Undergraduate and Professor Mark Shackleton, Associate Dean for Postgraduate) will be holding an open meeting for students to answer any queries you may have during the first week of term (week commencing 11 January). Further details to follow via email.

Until then, thank you again for your support and understanding. We wish you a safe journey home and all the best for the festive period.

Yours sincerely

Professor Angus Laing
Dean, Lancaster University Management School
