CENTRAL’s members attended the 3rd Institute of Mathematics and Operational Research Society conference on Mathematics in Operational Research held at Aston University in Birmingham last month. Professor Zografos organised and chaired two sessions titled “Airport Capacity” and “Optimising Emergency Management”.

The session on ‘Airport Capacity’ hosted presentations from the following CENTRAL members:

• Fotios Katsigiannis, PhD Candidate (OR-MASTER) presented a “A multi-criteria decision-making framework for generating and assessing airport schedules.”
• Sha Wang, PhD Candidate (OR-MASTER from Queen Mary university) presented an “Adaptive large neighbourhood search for single airport slot allocation problems.”
• Dr. Rob Shone and Dr. Jamie Fairbrother (CENTRAL members) presented “A new stochastic optimisation framework for airport slot allocation.”

Another talk in the same session was given by Sha Wang, PhD Candidate (OR-MASTER, Queen Mary university) who presented an “Adaptive large neighbourhood search for single airport slot allocation problems.”

In the session “Optimising Emergency Management”, Dr. Aleksandr Pirogov (Research associate working on RESPOND-OR and CENTRAL member) presented his work on “Modelling and solving the assisted evacuation problem with risk, efficiency, and fairness considerations”. Dr. Istenc Tarhan (Research associate working on RESPOND-OR and CENTRAL member) presented “A multi-objective rolling horizon personnel routing and scheduling model for large-scale natural disasters” in the Routing/Logistics session.

The conference provided an excellent opportunity for LUMS colleagues to demonstrate their research strengths, and network with the considerable community of researchers and practitioners who were in attendance.
