A new journal from the Centre for Scholarship and Innovation in Management Education (SIME) at Lancaster University tackles one of the most pressing questions facing higher education.

The second issue of the Journal of Scholarship and Innovation in Management Education examines how universities can prepare students for an unpredictable, digitally transformed, and globally complex world.

It brings together insights from across Lancaster University, from both academic and professional services members of SIME, covering issues as far ranging as EDI, experiential learning, industry-sponsored global student collaborations, and much more.

Editor in Chief Neil Ralph sets the tone for the journal in his editorial, challenging the long-standing view of higher education as a simple transfer of knowledge.

“Effective teaching thrives in a liminal space – where disciplinary expertise intersects with the art of facilitating learning,” said Neil. “Central to this approach is the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), framed not as an optional extra but as an essential foundation for pedagogical integrity, student success, and institutional relevance.

“The journal underscores a clear call to action: educators must embrace SoTL as both inquiry and practice, while institutions must recognise, support, and reward this work as central to academic life.”

Contributions showcase bold, evidence-based innovations in management education. Articles explore how authentic assessment, experiential learning, and reflective practice foster critical thinking and lifelong learning; how equity, inclusion, and student wellbeing must become integral to pedagogy; and how professional identity, creativity, and digital tools are reshaping learning environments.

Together, the work highlights how teaching can be scholarly, student-focused, and transformative.

Professor Radka Newton, Director of SIME, added: “By foregrounding intellectual development, inclusive teaching, and real-world application, the Journal of Scholarship and Innovation in Management Education positions itself as a leading voice in shaping the future of higher education.”
