Ronald Purser is a Professor of Management at San Francisco State University. He work on the challenges and issues of introducing mindfulness into secular contexts, particularly with regards to its encounter with modernity, Western consumer capitalism, and individualism.

COVID-19 has glaringly exposed the shortcomings of our Western neoliberal ideology which has abandoned the general welfare of society by leaving individuals to compete and fend for their own survival. The mindfulness movement has enabled and perpetuated this decrepit myth by accommodating to the status quo. McMindfulness adheres not only to a privatized view of stress, but also to an individualistic view of mind where society and the larger socio-economic contexts are hidden from view. By individualizing social problems, neoliberal mindfulness not only places the burden of stress on individuals, but it subverts the potential for political resistance and social activism through gestural anticapitalism.
