Precariat women’s experiences to undertake an entrepreneurial training program

Session 1, 11am-12pm: Precariat women’s experiences to undertake an entrepreneurial training program

In this session, Darah will present her research on the impact of entrepreneurial training programmes on women’s entrepreneruship. Research indicates that societal norms, industry practices, and government policy within many Western societies are creating a precariat ageing women population who are welfare-dependent, experiencing challenges in finding meaningful jobs and living in poverty with low self-efficacy. Appropriate entrepreneurial intervention programs are seen as critical labour market solutions which can help people out of precarious situations and into self-employment. Entrepreneurial intervention programs are touted worldwide as one active labour market policy solution, helping people out of welfare, into self-employment and contributing to economic growth. Using the qualitative methodology and Action Research approach with 40 disadvantaged Australian women over 50 years, reliant on welfare support, the current study explores how the Australian welfare system impacts these women’s circumstances and whether tailored programs to increase self-efficacy can reduce welfare reliance. This research identified that for ageing and precariat women, self-efficacy is tempered with lived experience and the welfare poverty trap, which can be broken with programs that help increase confidence, self-efficacy, skills, networks, and social connections, along with seed funding to start a micro-business. We discuss implications for research and policy.

Networking Break: 12-12:30pm: Networking, tea, coffee and biscuits.

Session 2, 12:30-1:30pm: Exploring international partnerships through the Women and Inclusive Entrepreneurship Research Alliance (WEIRA)

In this session, Dhara will introduce us to WIERA and its ambitions to include The Academy and LUMS in its international network and partnerships. WEIRA is a unit within Deakin Business School in partnership with Symbiosis International University in India. They recently welcomed Neoma Business School into the alliance. WIERA is committed to providing a platform for scholars and researchers to conduct purposeful, solution-oriented, impactful research and training that addresses current and emerging challenges in these areas. Their focus encompasses women entrepreneurs and others who face multifaceted challenges, including economic, sociocultural, cognitive, physical, and emotional obstacles.
