Our approach to EDI

In the Faculty, we employ a number of processes to ensure that our staff and students are treated with respect and are enabled to thrive both personally and professionally. We aim to make sure everyone feels as though they belong and that they can reach their full potential, regardless of background.

Heart - Values and Culture

At the core of our EDI processes is our heart, which embodies our values and culture. We trust and support one another, value and celebrate our differences, and share our workloads.

Head - Evidence and Research

In the Faculty, we ensure that our EDI approach is informed by evidence and research. We regularly update our members with the latest EDI data and conduct research into issues facing STEM staff and students.

Hands - Action and Impact

We ensure that our EDI processes are followed through with meaningful action and impact. This includes listening to and implementing staff and student suggestions, running EDI-based initiatives and striving to improve equality and equity within our workplace.

Our commitments

University EDI strategy

Much of our work at a Faculty level is informed by the University's wider EDI strategy, which aims to create a fairer and more inclusive workplace. We are working on addressing issues surrounding the gender pay gap, as well as contributing to the University's Race Equality, Disability, and Athena Swan charters.

Technicians Commitment

Technicians are an integral part of our Faculty. Lancaster University is a founding signatory for the Technician Commitment. The Technician Commitment is a university and research institution initiative, led by a steering board of sector bodies, hosted by the UK Institute for Technical Skills and Strategy. The Commitment aims to ensure visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technicians working in higher education and research, across all disciplines.
