A day in the life of a Management Science student
Posted on
You might not be familiar with ‘Management Science’ - neither was I when I was in my first year. I hope from reading this blog, you will have a clearer picture of what a day is like for a Management Science student.
I am currently a final year MORSE (Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics) student with no previous background in Economics and little in Mathematics. I was nervous and afraid of not being able to catch up with the lecture materials at the very beginning. However, the academic system really does help me a lot, even now!
Most modules will have two one-hour lectures with one seminar/workshop each week. The seminar or workshop is usually in a small group of 15 students, allowing us to engage well with the tutor and raise any queries about both the lecture materials and tutorial questions. Some modules also provide “drop-in” sessions once a week or biweekly, allowing us to resolve any uncertainties on lecture topics, seek academic advice, or even discuss career choices. Furthermore, if you are weak in academic writing or have a poor mathematical background, LUMS offers a range of activities to assist and guide you, ranging from MASH (Maths and Stats Help) to the Academic Writing Zone. Moreover, you will be assigned an academic advisor at the beginning of the year. I personally find them very useful in providing me insights about career paths - all of them are specialists in the fields that we want to go into.
Otherwise, I usually spend my time in the Library working on group projects and essays. You can book a group study space for a group project discussion. The Learning Zone, just opposite the library, and the Management School are also great places for group discussion that I would recommend.
If you would like to gain work experience, you can visit the Student Services hub (near the library) and ask for some advice. LUMS Careers in the Management School is another place where you can get help on CV checking and careers advice!
I hope the above provides more insights into studying management science at Lancaster University. I look forward to seeing you next year!
