A magical experience with the Walt Disney Company
Posted on

My name is Annabelle, and I am a final-year student studying BSc Hons Management, Politics and International Relations. As part of my degree, I completed a 15-month placement in the Corporate Social Responsibility team at The Walt Disney Company’s head office for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, based in London.
By my second year, I had several ideas for potential placements, so I had to narrow down my search and choose the positions that excited me the most. I didn’t apply for a high number of positions, not because I wasn’t invested in finding a placement, but because I wanted to concentrate on submitting several high-quality applications rather than spreading myself thin.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) captured my interest as I had learned about the concept during my course and I was aware it was a growing and prevalent field of business. CSR is a business model which seeks to involve the business in achieving societal goals and holds the business to account for its environmental and ethical practices. The role instantly stood out to me because of Disney’s reputation as a fun and unique company to work for, and because of its work with charities such as Make-A-Wish and MediCinema.
I was lucky enough to be put in touch with a fellow student who was carrying out her placement at Disney. She was able to share her knowledge of the recruitment process and Disney as a company. I also utilised the excellent LUMS Placement Team to look over my CV and cover letter and provide me with some hints and tips.
My experience working for Disney was one of highs and lows. For a northerner from a small village, moving to London to live with three strangers and work for a multi-national conglomerate was quite overwhelming at first.
Despite the challenges I faced, I wouldn’t change the experience as it equipped me with important skills for my future career, allowed me to really grow as a person and provided me with some incredible opportunities.
My highlights include organising and executing a festive celebration for more than 100 children in hospice care and taking 25 unique and hardworking hospice workers to the European premiere of Frozen 2.
