Within the UK, approximately seven million people of working age are registered as having a disability and hold an estimated spending power of around £249 billion. Yet an understanding of how they feel in the commercial marketplace is relatively unknown.
The aim of this project, undertaken by Dr Leighanne Higgins from Lancaster University funded by The Marketing Trust, was to share through the medium of art, the commercial experiences of persons with disabilities.
Across the UK, throughout 2019, persons with all different types of disability (i.e. physical, cognitive, visible and hidden) were asked to create an artwork of any form that best expressed their individual interaction with the commercial marketplace.
In displaying these artworks, this art exhibit not only shares commercial experiences of disability, but in prioritizing the artist’s ability over their oft focussed upon disability, this exhibit endeavours to challenge negative perceptions towards disability.
Coinciding with Disability History Month, this exhibit will run from the 4th December until the 7th December 2019. So, come along to The Gallery in The Storey and help to spark the beginning of positive change in access and inclusion in the marketplace.
