'Last lap' as an MSc Human Resource Management student at Lancaster
Posted on

It’s the holiday period for the rest of the school. However, for postgraduate students, we are still very much in session with everyone actively working on dissertations.
The heavy lifting with assessments and classes is over. However, there is even more pressure with regard to dissertation research as it forms a huge part of my overall grade.
With limited time available, the schedule is tight for meeting with supervisors and scheduling appointments for interviews or getting responses for questionnaires and analysing the data for the research. For my dissertation, I’m gathering data via interviews and am currently scheduling appointments with participants. I also work part-time, so it’s a lot to balance. However, with effective time management, I am able to set deadlines for myself and keep up with them.
Alongside the dissertation, there is pressure regarding life after studies. There are options available for international students: there is the graduate route as a second option if the work visa route is not available at this time and this gives international students the opportunity to work for 2 years after completion of studies. I have been able to network with some HR professionals who were invited to have a talk with MSc HRM students and have them recommend me for jobs. I have had a few job interviews and I am still actively looking.
Despite all the things postgraduate students have to work on, there are still social events scheduled to enable us to make connections, relax, unwind and refresh our minds. As a popular saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
It’s been an exciting and enlightening year with amazing experiences and connections made, and I am excited for my next steps.
