From the moment I set foot at Lancaster University, I knew it was the one for me, and there was no doubt in my mind that this was where I would end up a year later. After a long time scrolling through the university's course list, I came across Management and Human Resources. Initially, I was attracted to this course as it offered the study abroad element. However, once I read the course outline and did some research, I soon realised that a degree in Management and Human Resources was everything I was looking for.

This degree also offered the opportunity to do a year of industrial work experience. I couldn’t decide between doing a study abroad, or industrial work placement and so took up a week work experience placement with Foxes Biscuits. This valuable experience confirmed that a year of work experience with a top company is what was of most interest to me.

I chose Lancaster as I came from a small village in Hull and Lancaster University gave me a community feel. I did not feel like I was just one student amongst thousands of others, I felt like I was an important part of a growing, diverse community. It was also one of the only universities in the country that offered Management and Human Resources with the option of an industrial placement.

Lancaster’s unique degree schemes allowed total flexibility for me in my first year. Alongside Management and Human Resources, this year I have also studied sociology and marketing. By doing so my knowledge has broadened and increased drastically. I feel as though I have a strong understanding of management and human resources, but also a developed understanding and deepened interest in other disciplines. I enjoyed my sociology module so much that I have decided to continue this next year alongside my Management and Human Resource studies.

Throughout this year I have had constant support from the Management School careers team who have helped me prepare for the application process for my placement, including a specific module. This has given me vital skills and taught me how to perform best in assessment centres, interviews both online and in-person and helped me to perfect my CV. I feel in a very good position as a result of this help and believe that the support given with be a vital part of my success.

Lancaster University has also given me the opportunity to take part in many extracurricular activities, such as being the manager of social media and public relations for the Marketing Society. I also have been given the opportunity to take part in a module working with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development in Portugal working with some of the biggest companies in the world. This module will broaden my understanding of how companies can work together to become more sustainable.

I cannot wait for my second year at Lancaster University!
