LUMS academic explores changing shape of work at recent conference

Monideepa Tarafdar

Professor Monideepa Tarafdar was invited to present her research at the recent Work of the Future event hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and British Telecom. This dedicated event aimed to bring together Academia, Government, and Industry to share views on how the world of work will change in the future, share learning, and broaden perspectives.

Alongside key speakers from major companies, universities and government, Professor Tarafdar presented on the themes of Digital Well Being and AI Skills for the future. For the first she noted that one size fits all solutions, such as banning emails after work hours, which some companies have done, do not help. Instead, companies should develop guidelines to help employees figure out how to use technology in flexible ways that work for them. For the second she noted that despite the hype around AI, the actual uptake and benefits of AI have proved elusive for most organizations. She presented her research on the skills and capabilities needed for organizations to successfully implement and use AI for business benefits, and move beyond the hype.

Professor Tarafdar said, "Digital Well Being and AI related skills are two of the most important pain-points for companies today. This event provided an excellent opportunity to shape what organisations need to do differently to tackle these two issues. It helped to make important links to relevant Government and Industry players in the ecosystem to further develop key dialogues."
