“State of UK Competition (2024): new insights for the UK economy” by Rajssa Mechelli, Economic Advisor at the UK Competition and Market Authority (CMA). The Seminar will take place on Thursday, 7 November, from 13:00 to 14:00, Charles Carter A15.
Abstract: The UK’s third State of Competition report offers a comprehensive overview of competitive conditions across the economy, underscoring the importance of well-functioning markets in driving productivity, innovation, and consumer benefits. Commissioned by the government, this report examines trends in market power and business dynamism, finding that effective competition policy has curbed excessive markups compared to other advanced economies. Key insights reveal challenges for new entrants and emphasize the significance of competition in rapidly evolving markets like digital and AI. This presentation will discuss policy priorities aimed at sustaining competitive markets, supporting innovation, and strengthening the UK’s economic growth trajectory.
Note that the lecture is free to attend for all staff, students, and members of the general public. Registration is NOT required, just turn up.
Master and PhD students are strongly encouraged to participate to the talk if available.
