English language requirements for postgraduate applicants

Depending on your nationality and where you have studied previously, we may ask you to provide a recognised English language qualification.

The English language requirements vary depending on the course that you are applying for.

On this page you will find a list of English language requirements by department and these are listed under the faculty that they are part of.

Ways to meet our English language requirements

There are several ways that you can provide evidence of your English language ability, details are listed below.

  • Recognised English language qualifications

    We accept the following tests as evidence of English language ability:

    • IELTS Academic (UKVI Approved)
    • IELTS Academic (Other Centres)
    • ToEFL IBT
    • Pearson PTE Academic

    Our required scores vary by course and you can find the scores needed for each department on this page.  

    IELTS, ToEFL and Pearson certificates are valid for 2 years from the test date and your certificate will need to be valid on the start date of your studies at Lancaster. If you have taken a test multiple times, we cannot combine scores together to meet the requirements. 

    If you take the Pearson test, you will need to give permission for Lancaster University to verify your score.

    If your English language score does not meet our requirements, we may be able to consider you for one of our pre-sessional English language programmes.

    The following English language qualifications may also be accepted.  

    • Cambridge English: Advanced CAE
    • Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE)
    • CaMLA ECPE 
    • TRINITY ISE

  • High school English

    If you have not taken one of our recognised English language qualifications we may be able to accept an aternative English language qualification.  The alternatives we may be able to consider are detailed below by country.

    If you are applying for a Postgraduate course and your country is not listed above and if you have you taken one of the recognised English Language qualifications, please contact the Admissions Team.

  • Previous UK study

    We may be able to consider waiving our English language requirements if you have:

    • Studied in the UK or other majority English-speaking country for at least 2 years of your undergraduate degree and/or for at least 1 year if you studied a postgraduate degree; and 
    • Completed and been awarded your degree no more than three years before the intended start of your chosen course 
  • Majority English speaking countries

    The following countries are those deemed to be a majority English-speaking country:

    • Antigua and Barbuda
    • Australia
    • The Bahamas
    • Barbados
    • Belize
    • Canada*
    • Dominica 
    • Grenada 
    • Guyana 
    • Jamaica
    • New Zealand
    • St Kitts and Nevis
    • St Lucia 
    • St Vincent and the Grenadines
    • Trinidad and Tobago
    • USA 

    If you are a national of one of the above countries, you are not required to submit evidence of your English language ability.

    If you are not a national of one of the above countries but have completed a full degree in one of the above countries,  you will not be required to submit further evidence of your English Language if you have:

    • Completed and been awarded your degree no more than three years before the intended start of your chosen course.

    * In the case of Canadian qualifications and you hold a degree which was taught and assessed in English. Holders of a Baccalauréat / Bachelors degree from a Canadian francophone university will be required to meet the English language requirement if they are not a national of a Majority English-speaking country.

Management School (LUMS)

  • Accounting and Finance

    English language requirements for the majority of our courses:

    • IELTS Academic test (UKVI Approved) with an overall score of at least 7.0, with a minimum of 6.0 in each element; or
    • IELTS Academic test (Other Centres) with an overall score of at least 7.0, with a minimum of 6.0 in each element; or
    • Pearson PTE Academic with a score of at least 65 and a minimum of 50 in each component of the test; or
    • ToEFL IBT with an overall score of at least 94, with a minimum of 19 in reading, 19 in listening, 19 in speaking and 22 in writing

     The English language requirements for Accounting and Finance PhD:

    For courses in the Accounting and Finance Department with an October start date (excluding PhD Accounting and Finance):

    • Requirements for 10 week PELP 
      IELTS Academic test (UKVI Approved) with an overall score of at least 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 in each element - if you have academic conditions to meet; or
      IELTS Academic test (Other Centres) with an overall score of at least 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 in each element - if English language is your only condition
