This event is now FULLY BOOKED. This study afternoon comprises two talks on the history of Whalley Abbey in its regional context, as well as a guided walk around the well-preserved remains of the abbey.
Professor Fiona Edmonds will discuss the medieval history of Whalley and its region, including the establishment of the abbey in 1296, following its relocation from Stanlow by the River Mersey. Dr Christopher Tinmouth will place Whalley Abbey in the wider context of the Cistercian Order in medieval northern England. The two lecturers will then lead groups around the site to relate the buildings and architecture to their historical context. The talks will take place in the Great Hall of the Diocese of Blackburn’s Retreat and Conference Centre at Whalley Abbey.

The site is open until 5.00pm and everyone who enrols on this excursion will be able to visit the gardens independently until closing time.
Fee: £20 (£18 for Patrons and Friends of the Regional Heritage Centre)
Fee includes entrance to the Whalley Abbey site and one refreshment break. Please wear footwear suitable for uneven and muddy terrain, and bring waterproof clothing/umbrellas in case of inclement weather.
Getting to Whalley Abbey
Whalley Abbey is in the centre of Whalley Vilage just off the A59 and three miles south of Clitheroe. From the M6, leave at junction 31 and take the A59 towards Clitheroe. Whalley (12 miles away) is clearly signposted. Alternatively, from the M62 and North Manchester area, take the M66 and then the A56, following signs to Accrington, Clitheroe and then Whalley.
