Join us in welcoming Visiting Professor Andrew Sixsmith to Lancaster University by sharing in his seminar "A Global Agenda for Technology and Ageing". Technology is seen as a way to support and improve the health and independence of older people. However, “AgeTech” research and innovation has overwhelmingly focused on the needs of older people in developed countries. Professor Sixsmith argues that AgeTech research and innovation needs to recognize that population aging is a global challenge that requires a global agenda that engages with initiatives such as the UN’s Strategic Development Goals and Decade for Healthy Ageing. It is also important to situate AgeTech within the wider debate on global disparities, and megatrends such as climate change, urbanisation and international migration.

Andrew Sixsmith, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Gerontology at Simon Fraser University and is Director of Science and Technology for Aging Research (STAR) Institute at Simon Fraser University. He was the joint founding Scientific Director of AGE-WELL Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE), Canada’s Technology and Aging Network, from 2014-2021 and the Associate Scientific Director from 2021-22. Dr. Sixsmith was past President of the International Society of Gerontechnology from 2014-16 and was previously Director of the Gerontology Research Centre and Deputy Director of the IRMACS Centre at SFU. His research interests include technology for independent living, theories and methods in aging and understanding the innovation process. His work has involved him in a leadership and advisory role in numerous major international research projects and initiatives with academic, government and industry partners.
