School of Architecture Phase 2 construction to begin

Bowland Annexe

A programme of works will take place from Monday 24th April until October 2023 to provide additional facilities for the ongoing expansion of Lancaster University's School of Architecture. The initial stage of works includes alterations, refurbishment and re-purposing of existing space in Bowland Annexe and Bowland Hall; this is followed later in the 2023/2024 Academic Year by alterations to the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA) building. The project will accommodate an expansion to LICA’s undergraduate and postgraduate Architecture courses, which were established in autumn 2020 and 2022 respectively, and will deliver the space necessary for the planned expansion of the School of Architecture until 2025.

The project will enable the School of Architecture to expand and consolidate their location to the north of the Bailrigg campus. The re-purposing and refurbishment of existing building stock, in preference to new building construction, meets the University’s sustainability commitment and Carbon Management Plan. The planned design of the scheme promotes a sustainable approach to the works, with intelligent adaptive reuse of existing buildings and structures incorporated to maximise the benefits of existing assets and reduce waste and costs.

The first phase of the project will commence on Monday 24th April with works taking place in Bowland Annexe D floor, progressing through Bowland Annexe and Bowland Hall over the summer. Alterations to LICA C floor will start once the work to Bowland Annexe and Hall is complete. The project will include localised noisy demolition and construction works in Bowland Annexe, Bowland Hall and latterly LICA C floor, however efforts will be made to minimise disruption to the local area whilst works take place between 8am and 6pm. A site compound to support the project has been established between the Music Building and Great Hall. A further materials store will be formed across a number of parking spaces on the North Drive next to LICA.
