Samuel OliverPhD student, Associate Lecturer
My PhD project is on (im)politeness metalanguage in a corpus of Shakespeare’s plays.
My main interests are in (im)politeness, metapragmatics and metapragmatic discourse, and metaphors of communication. I'm especially interested in how talk about behaviour can be used to control behaviour, and how talk about language can be used to control language use.
I also have interests in interjections/pragmatic noise, metaphors, etymology and language change, corpus-based methods, and the broad areas of pragmatics, stylistics, historical linguistics, and corpus linguistics.
