Students from around the world attend Summer Schools

Over 170 students from institutions in 10 different countries have travelled to Lancaster University this year to take part in summer school programmes.
Students joined one of four summer schools on offer, which included subject-led summer schools, Environment and Sustainability, and International Commercial Law.Or one of the two International Cultural Exchange (ICE) summer schools.
While on the programmes students were introduced to the Lancaster college system and assigned a college for the duration of their stay.
During the three weeks, students in all summer schools had the opportunity to join in on social and sporting activities including a College Cup competition, Cross-Cultural Workshops, and a two-night trip to London.
Those in the ICE programme attended a variety of credit-bearing lectures, workshops, Cross-Cultural Competency sessions and trips with a focus on understanding different issues facing British communities.
Environment and Sustainability students attended a mixture of lectures, workshops, labs, and practical sessions such as marine ecology, sustainable energy, and food security. They also took part in a series of field trips to a nearby work site to see the environmental impact of land and soil management in practice, an upland farm in the Forest of Bowland and Myerscough Agricultural College.
Students on the International Commercial Law programme took part in lectures and seminars with a focus on business law, specifically covering ‘choice of business’, ‘founding of business’ and ‘Insolvency and Termination of Business’. They also had workshops on academic writing and legal writing skills as well as joining the ICE programme lecture on ‘Britain’s Role in the World’ which recognises that knowledge of cultures and global international relations is important for global business.
Professor Simon Guy, Pro Vice-Chancellor Global, said: “Our summer schools offer both visiting and Lancaster students the opportunity to make lifelong connections that span the globe and provide a great way to experience Lancaster. The programmes also offer our academic departments the opportunity to further internationalise and connect with partners.
It is always wonderful to see students from around the world enjoying the Lancaster University academic and social life as well as experiencing industry, cities, and sights on offer in the UK.”
Summer schools run through July with a second ICE summer school in August – September. If you are interested in hosting a summer school or would like to find out more, please contact the global experiences team at globalschools@lancaster.ac.uk
