Throughout the course of 2023 it has become painfully clear that the UK has a sickness issue – indeed there are now over 2.6 million individuals opting out of the labour market altogether due to ill health.

A key part of tackling this issue must be to deepen our understanding of the relationship between work and health, and the extent to which it’s the nature of jobs on offer that are keeping many people who want to work out of the labour market.

This demands a renewed policy focus on creating more ‘Good Work’. These are jobs that are not only financially rewarding but also provide security for making a living. They empower workers to have a voice in shaping their lives and facilitate skills development.

But how can policymakers open up access to 'Good Work' for everyone, and what can employers do to increase the quality of jobs on offer, creating more opportunities for those with long term health conditions to re-enter the labour market?
