Lancaster University adds Bluesky to its portfolio of social media accounts, as the network continues to grow among the academic community.

Lancaster University is joining the conversation on social media network Bluesky.

The network, which is similar in style and function to earlier of versions of Twitter, now has more than 30 million users after a period of rapid growth.

It has emerged as a popular tool within the academic community in particular, attracting researchers and institutions across the world and becoming a data source for Altmetrics, which tracks research influence and visibility.

The Lancaster University account is called @lancasteruni and can be reached at bsky.app/profile/lancasteruni.bsky.social

Assistant Director of Communications Vicky Tyrrell said: “Social media provides valuable opportunities for Lancaster to connect with different audiences.

“From attracting prospective students, to engaging with policymakers, we use a range of platforms and approaches – and we continually review our activity to ensure we’re making best use of what’s available.

“After evaluation, and with input from a range of colleagues, we’re excited to launch the University’s Bluesky account, which we hope will offer a useful way to engage with an even wider audience.”

The University already has nearly half-a-million followers across its institutional accounts on platforms including Instagram and LinkedIn. Accounts managed by faculties, departments and services enable the University to reach many more.
