Words & Actions: a podcast about how language matters in business, politics and beyond

Veronika Koller (Department of Linguistics and English Language) has been interested in how language is used in business for a long time, but it still took her and her co-author five years to finish the textbook Language in Business, Language at Work. It was a huge undertaking to look at business and professional life through the language lens, from branding and marketing to PR and crisis communication, from job interviews to management and leadership, from office chatter to emails and presentations.
A year after the textbook was published, she teamed up with a third colleague to share their insights about how important language is in professional life. Grand plans were followed by several (thousand) emails and virtual meetings, and with the financial support from Veronika’s home department at Lancaster and others, the monthly Words & Actions podcast was launched last September. So far, seven episodes have been released. Together with its website, the podcast provides many resources for language teachers and communication professionals, including a glossary, examples for teaching, and interviews with academics and practitioners. You can tune into Words & Actions and access all materials at wordsandactions.blog – enjoy!
