To ensure researchers have the time, clarity and support they need:
- All IAA calls are announced with 8–10+ weeks’ notice, mirroring UKRI’s own processes.
- Pre-announcements, online briefings, and clear expectations are provided to increase accessibility.
- Calls clearly identify areas of underrepresentation (from Equality Impact Assessments) and encourage applications from these groups.
- Funding opportunities are proactively shared across staff networks, including Women’s Network and Disabled Employees Network.
This approach has improved awareness, reduced barriers, and led to higher-quality applications.
Our ongoing Equality Impact Assessment (EIA), launched in 2023, analyses participation across protected characteristics and compares patterns across faculties.
Since June 2023, we have seen improvements across all groups previously identified as underrepresented:
- Women: small increase in applicants and an 8.25% increase in successful award holders.
- Asian/mixed/other ethnicities: 11% increase in applicants and 4% increase in successful applicants (EPSRC).
- Disability: 8% increase in applicants and 9% increase in successful applicants.
In the AHRC IAA specifically:
- 20% increase in female applicants, tracking to a 16% increase in successful applicants.
- While ethnic minority representation fell in AHRC submissions, this finding is shaping targeted 2025 outreach.
This data-led approach ensures we understand who is applying, who is succeeding, and where further work is needed.
We ensure that decision-making processes are inclusive, rigorous and transparent:
- All panel members must complete unconscious bias training before reviewing applications.
- Panel membership and roles are publicly outlined in each call.
- Panel members are asked not to review draft applications for colleagues, to safeguard fairness.
- The IAA Manager serves as Panel Secretary only, not a scorer or reviewer.
- Application forms are designed to support fair assessment, with updated guidance on EDI and Responsible Research & Innovation (RRI).
This structure promotes consistency, reduces conflicts of interest, and supports fair outcomes.
Recognising the importance of socially responsible research impact, the IAAs explicitly include:
“Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Innovation and Impact”
…as an eligible thematic area for funding.
This encourages proposals that directly address social inequality, representation and community inclusion.
We also support:
- Flexibility for researchers with caring or parental responsibilities
- Opportunities for early-career researchers from underrepresented groups
- A forms-based system that enables accessible data capture while allowing offline collaboration
To ensure all staff are aware of the opportunities and resources available:
- IAA updates feature regularly in LU Text, the university’s global weekly bulletin.
- Press releases highlight IAA-supported innovations and credit UKRI funding.
- Recently funded projects and call details are promoted across websites, staff networks, and social channels.
This increased visibility has led to higher engagement and more diverse applicants.
Our EDI work is closely aligned with Responsible Research & Innovation:
- Updated guidance helps applicants reflect on RRI considerations during application.
- A new self-assessment tool is being launched to help applicants explore EDI, ethics, data governance, trusted research, and risk.
- Funding agreements signpost researchers to risk assessment, export control, ethical review, and EDI guidance.
This integrated approach ensures that impact activity is both inclusive and responsible.
