The overarching themes of the Education Framework.
Our curriculum isn’t just rigorous; it’s designed based on the latest research and proven teaching methods. This approach ensures an authentic, relevant and high-quality learning experience for every student.
We are committed to creating a welcoming environment where everyone can thrive. We actively work to remove barriers, ensuring all students are prepared for success in their careers and communities.
We believe a rich learning experience goes together with student wellbeing. Our supportive environment helps students succeed and build valuable, lasting networks.
We foster a culture of creativity, encouraging new ideas in education while ensuring our decisions benefit our students and institution for years to come. We’re always looking ahead, ready to adapt and innovate sustainably.
All Lancaster University programmes are built on the following principles:
Our programmes are designed with a primary focus on student learning outcomes. All teaching, learning activities, and assessments are carefully aligned to help students achieve these outcomes effectively.
We believe in equitable access to education. Our learning, teaching, and assessment methods are intentionally designed to be inclusive, ensuring a positive and fair experience for all students.
To keep our programmes at the forefront of education, we continuously incorporate the latest pedagogical approaches, subject matter expertise, and technological advancements. This ensures our curriculum remains current and prepares students for future challenges.
Each programme is structured to provide a logical and progressive learning path. Modules act as building blocks, with all core and optional elements contributing directly to the programme's overall learning goals and the appropriate level of study.
Our programmes are designed to cultivate Lancaster University's distinctive graduate attributes: academic excellence, professional excellence, and global citizenship. These key qualities are integrated into the credit-bearing components of every student's learning journey.
Every programme is led by a dedicated Programme Lead, who is supported by a committed programme team. This ensures strong oversight and a cohesive learning environment.
Students have easy access to comprehensive programme information through our student portal. Our online learning spaces are designed to be consistent, accessible, and engaging, providing a seamless learning experience.
Our programmes are carefully structured to support students throughout their academic journey.
We begin by clearly setting expectations and preparing students for academic study, fostering a strong sense of community and belonging from day one. As students’ progress through their years of study, we help them understand how expectations evolve, particularly in line with the Framework for Higher Education Qualification (FHEQ) levels.
We provide appropriate support at each stage, ensuring core and optional modules are directly relevant to the specific level of study.
We prioritise student well-being by ensuring workload is distributed as evenly as possible throughout the academic year. We provide students with a clear breakdown of learning, teaching, and assessment activities to help them manage their time effectively.
Programmes are built using modules that are directly relevant to the level of study and are typically 20, 30, 40, 60, 80, or 90 credits in size. In exceptional circumstances, and when pedagogically justified, programmes may include up to four 10-credit modules at FHEQ Levels 6 (final year of an undergraduate degree) and 7 (final year of an integrated master's).
Any module choices offered to students are pedagogically sound, ensure a coherent learning experience. When options are provided, they come from a carefully curated selection of modules that adhere to our core design principles. To ensure a strong foundation, programmes include a minimum number of core module credits at each FHEQ level: 80 at Level 4 (first year undergraduate), 60 at Level 5 (second year undergraduate), 20 at Level 6 (final year undergraduate), and 20 at Level 7 (final year integrated master's), where applicable.
The approach to assessment is designed to be fair, effective and supportive of student learning.
Assessment is designed at the programme level to be coherent and directly linked to the intended learning outcomes, ensuring it truly measures what students have learned.
Our assessments are valid, reliable, and fair, consistently upholding academic integrity practices.
Student assessment workload is appropriate and consistent across all university programmes, taking into account credit value and year of study (FHEQ level).
Student assessment workload must be appropriate and consistent with programmes across the University in relation to credit value and year of study (FHEQ level), with sequencing and timing of assessment carefully managed to avoid overload.
We provide timely, specific, and actionable feedback on assessments. This helps students understand their progress, identify areas for improvement, and guide their ongoing learning and development.
Our assessment strategy includes formative activities specifically designed to advance student learning and effectively prepare them for summative assessments.
