Fully funded PhD Studentship in Nuclear Instrumentation are available within the Engineering Department.

Plutonium-Contaminated Material (PCM) has to be identified and treated appropriately. Currently assays in contaminated facilities are primarily based on total alpha counting. Most conventional alpha detection systems are only effective at relatively short range, or if the detection is based on alpha-induced air fluorescence, then generally only under dark conditions. The aim of this project is to develop a scanning based optical imaging system to detect alpha-induced air fluorescence under daylight conditions from long distances. Alpha induced air-fluorescence yield will also be investigated with respect to alpha energy to determine the corresponding radioactive isotope. The project is supported by funding from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (administered by the National Nuclear Laboratory) for 3.5 years and is also supported by the Sellafield Limited.

Lancaster University has an international reputation for high-quality research in the Engineering and Physical Sciences (It is ranked consistently in the top 10 for UK universities). The Department of Engineering comprises over 30 academic staff where nuclear research activity accounts for over half of the research staff/student body. Engineering Lancaster is one of the few academic departments in the UK with a proven ability to conceive research, design, construct and commercialise digital nuclear instrumentation.

Potential candidates for this position should have or expect to achieve a first-class or upper second class degree in Nuclear / Electronics / Electrical / Physics (or in a similar discipline) or equivalent relevant experience. Due to funding regulations application is restricted to UK/EU students and appointment will always be made on merit. A full standard studentship consists of tuition fees, together with a maintenance grant (standard EPSRC stipend+2k) and a research training support grant.
