Africa in the Renaissance Era: Legacies of Power, Trade and Colonial Spoils
This talk explores the rich artistic heritage of Africa during the Renaissance, emphasizing the power, wealth and global connectedness of various peoples such as the Sapi (present-day Sierra Leone), the Kingdom of the Kongo and the Kingdom of Benin (present-day Nigeria). We will discuss the later acquisition of art from Benin by the British Punitive Expedition of 1897 and current calls for repatriation of those works from European institutions.
