The AWAKE project
Abstract:
As conventional RF accelerating technology nears the physicallimits of accelerating gradients, novel accelerating techniques are beingexplored with ever increasing interest from the accelerator community. TheAdvanced Wakefield (AWAKE) experiment at CERN, Geneva, uses high-intensityproton bunches from the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) to excite intenseelectromagnetic wakefields in a plasma. Electrons injected into the plasma justbehind the protons are accelerated by these wakefields. Lancaster Universityhas had a key role in the construction of AWAKE. This presentation will give anoverview of the plasma wakefield acceleration concept and highlight Lancaster’sinvolvement on AWAKE.
