DeLC Language Week is happening every day from June 6th to June 10th with everyone welcome to attend. On Thursday June 9th, there will be different Italian sessions on offer.
The schedule for our Italian sessions on Thursday is:
10:00 – 11:00 : Real, Copy, Fake
By the nineteenth century, Britain had become a treasure house of Italian Renaissance art. The Grand Tour along with European wars and revolutions filled the walls of stately homes and London mansions.
These artworks, in name if not in fact, were thought to be by one of the great artists of the Renaissance – Raphael, Titian, Leonardo, or Michelangelo. But some were copies, some were outright forgeries, and many more were wrongly attributed.
It was a time when art connoisseurship was in its infancy and buying Renaissance art was little more than an elevated game of Blind Man’s Bluff.
The two Real, Copy, Fake lectures chart the development of art connoisseurship during the nineteenth century and the individuals trying to answer questions of attribution. It was a time when connoisseurship was still an art and before it became a science.
These talks outline the historical foundation for popular programmes such as the BBC’s Fake or Fortune series.
Dr Christopher Hodkinson is the author of 'A Question of Attribution – Art connoisseurship in the nineteenth century'.
11:30 – 12:30 : Machiavelli - Misunderstood and misrepresented + The rise of S Berlusconi

learning science via language, learning language via science
Science and languages are often considered to be separate, and there often a perception that science is the same in every language, so it doesn't matter what language you use, right? Yes, and NO. Firstly, scientific concepts may be identical, but they are expressed differently in different languages. Secondly, more importantly, science is more than the concepts, it's COLLABORATIVE and you work together with PEOPLE who speak different languages.
In this talk, I will describe how you can use languages to learn about science, and how you can use science to learn languages.
This presentation is in Italian with slides in English.
it will also be delivered by dual delivery so people can attend from a distance.
