We would like to invite you to the next in a series of Global Futures events ‘exploring burning questions for global society’: Global Governance and World Peace.

The talk will be derived by SardarMasood Khan, former Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations and currently serving as the President of Azad Jammu and Kashmi.

The importance of good governance, at the state level, for peace and stability is widely recognised. That correlation is not made automatically between global governance and world peace. Despite the emergence of the United Nations, the world does not have a cohesive global architecture; nor is it considered to be a desirable and prudent goal by those who believe in realpolitik. As a result, developing and weaker nations are keener to call for the international rule of law than the strong nations which are confident that they can protect their interests without always subjecting them to strict international regimes of governance. But good and efficient global governance is becoming imperative because of, among others, the rise and spread of asymmetric warfare, regional, intra-regional and intra-state conflicts, climate change, weapons of mass destruction and our economic system demanding a sustainable development agenda. While world statesmen do look at global governance as a positive factor, they apply it in fragments. A new approach is emerging to opt for global governance as a global common beyond the UN to steer the world towards peace and shared prosperity.
