Event Details

This is the first webinar of the Health Economics at Lancaster (HEAL) Health Policy Webinar Series, where presenters share work relevant for health economics and policy.

This presentation by Dr Pedro Conceição, Director of the Human Development Report Office, United Nations Development Programme (UNPD), explores the conceptual evolution of human development frameworks to more comprehensively measure wellbeing and agency achievements. It details the progression of essential measurement tools—such as the Human Development Index (HDI), Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), and Gender Social Norms Index —and highlights recent cutting edge metrics that capture granular inequalities, including recent technical advancements, specifically the use of machine learning and satellite imagery to generate hyper-local, grid-level HDI estimates. The presentation integrates intergenerational equity by accounting for planetary pressures and the proposal of concepts like a Nature Relationship Index. Finally, the presentation will discuss how these evolving metrics influence and drive decision-making processes across both the public and private sectors.
