Energy demand in China has risen rapidly and reached an unprecedented level due to the high-speed economic growth and modern development.

As a result, the Chinese government faces a growing pressure to address the energy shortage and environmental deterioration, mainly resulting from an over-dependence on fossil energy. China has become both the largest energy consumer and CO2 emitting country in the world in 2015. Utilization of potential for renewable energy is necessary for changing inappropriate energy consumption structure, protecting environment and achieving sustainable economic and social development. In view of such mentioned situation, this presentation firstly introduces the energy structure as well as the key technologies and development status of renewable energy in China, which includes offshore wind power, tidal energy, wave energy and other ocean energy. Besides, based on the current situation in China, the presentation makes a preliminary prediction of the development of ocean energy in the country for the future decades, and proposes targeted countermeasures and suggestions.Professor Dahai Zhang is the Deputy Secretary-General of Division of Ocean Technology System for Chinese Society of Oceanography, Deputy Director of the Institute of Ocean Engineering and Technology at Zhejiang University (ZJU), and AWTEC (Asian Wave and Tidal Energy Conference Series) Organizing Committee member. He received PhD from ZJU of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering in 2010. Afterwards, he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Department of Mechanical Engineering at ZJU in 2011 and in the Engineering Department at Lancaster University from 2012 to 2013, respectively.Professor Zhang has worked with various research projects dealing with modelling, design and measurements of renewable energy machines such as wave energy converter, tidal current turbine and wind turbine. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed journal/conference papers in proposed areas, and chaired 5th China Marine Renewable Energy Conference in 2016 and 3th China Ocean Technology Conference as organizing president in 2017.
