Join us for Morecambe Carnival 2019!

Morecambe Carnival is set to make a spectacular return to Morecambe’s seafront on August 10th and 11th 2019 and Lancaster University is proud to sponsor, and take part in, the Carnival for the first time this year.

Now in its 6th year, Morecambe Carnival 2019 (MC19) offers two days packed full with activities, attractions and performances, and all for free!

Very popular and returning this year is the entertaining and occasionally explosive EDF Energy Science Zone, which for the first time will include science stands and talks from Lancaster University! Located in the stunning atmosphere of the Winter Gardens in Morecambe, the Science Zone will be home to our scientists, physicists, biologists and forensic experts for a weekend of fun, interactive and educational activities.

So come along! Put on your lab coat, grab a pair of rubber gloves, and join us as we discover quantum physics through the stunning LED cube of randomness, unveil the mysteries hiding in DNA with strawberries, find out about the singularity of our hands with the H-unique project, and explore the immune system by creating your own snot in a tube! Who said you can’t have fun while studying science?!

You will find details of the activities and talks run by Lancaster University below. For more information about the Carnival visit morecambecarnival.org, Facebook.com/MorecambeCarnival or Twitter @MCMCarnival

Programme of Lancaster University Events at Morecambe Carnival

Join our teams in the Winter Gardens Science Zone Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th August, from 11am to 3pm. On the menu: science, physics, forensics, biology and lots of fun! All workshops and talks are free to attend and open to all. Please keep your eyes peeled for the schedule of talks on Morecambe Carnival’s website, for the most up-to-date information.

STANDS

Random Revolution: Research from Lancaster University has created a solution using quantum physics that generates truly random numbers - come and see it visualised on a stunning 3D LED cube! (Saturday 10th)

All About DNA: Learn more about this fascinating molecule that helps to make us what we are. Find out about how DNA profiling is used to solve crimes and have a go at purifying DNA from strawberries. (Sunday 11th)

I have a cold, it’s snot funny: Explore the immune system and how specialised immune cells and antibodies work to fight off everything from the common cold to cancer. Observe bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms from up close under the microscope and make your very own snot in a tube! (Sunday 11th)

TALKS

H-unique project: The H-unique project is a five year, EU funded programme of research to investigate inherent and acquired anatomical variation in the human hand. This project has arisen directly from groundbreaking forensic science research that has been critical to successful prosecution in cases of crimes against children. Read more about the H-unique project (Saturday and Sunday)

Random Revolution: Few things happen randomly. The poor selection of lottery numbers wastes money, and flaws in the processes computers use to choose passwords weakens security. Our scientists have found a solution in quantum physics! (Saturday 10th)

All about DNA: We hear about DNA all the time, but to which extend should we play with this molecule at the essence of every living thing? Join the debate about how and whether we should alter DNA to change genes in animals, plants or people. (Sunday 11th)

We look forward to welcoming you at Morecambe Carnival!
