Materials Science Institute and the Physics Department Colloquia: "Doping Semiconductor Nanocrystals" by Prof Narayan Pradhan. Prof Pradhan is doing a lecture tour in the UK as part of his Oxford Instruments Young Nanoscientist India Award for 2017.

Abstract: Doping a few impurity atoms in semiconductor host nanocrystals can strongly influence the crystal growth and its properties. Hence, doping has been widely used as an efficient approach for obtaining new functional nanomaterials and also study of fundamentals of crystal growth in solution. However, placing odd dopant ions in a small volume of host nanocrystal lattice remain challenging. Selection of dopants and hosts cannot be random as they need compatibility and also this is chosen as per the desire of obtaining specific property on the host material. This talk would present the doping of optically active dopants in various quantum confined semiconductor host nanocrystals for the evolution of dopant induced optical emission in a new spectral window. This would show the magic activity of few impurity atoms for hijacking the original host emission indifferent systems. Latest developments of chemistry and photo-physical properties of doping in chalcogenides and perovskite nanocrystals would be presented.

Professor Pradhan was awarded the Young Nanoscientist India Award for 2017 at the Nanotechnology Forum for Indian Scientists in April 2017 which took place at JNCASR, Bangalore. The Nanotechnology Forum for Indian Scientists was established in 2015 to encourage research in the field of Nanotechnology in India and to acknowledge outstanding achievements in this field. The ‘Oxford Instruments Young Nanoscientist India Award’ is presented biennially by the NT Forum to promote scientific exchange between Britain and India and recognise the work of outstanding young Indian researchers.

Dr Narayan Pradhan is currently working as a Professor in the Department of Materials Science at Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science,Kolkata. He has obtained his PhD from IIT Kharagpur. Currently he is working as Senior Editor in The Journal of Physical Chemistry A/B/C (ACS) and is among top 5 authors in The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. Dr Pradhan serves as Editorial Advisory Board member in (1) Chemistry of Materials, (2) ACS EnergyLetters and (3) ChemNanoMat. Dr Pradhan received the young career award from DST nanomission, Govt of India in 2015 for his research contribution in nanoscience. He received DST Swarnajayanti Fellowship in chemical science in 2012. He also received the CRSI Bronze Medal for 2017 and LNJ Bhilwara ResearchFellowship award in 2007 in Nanoscience.
