Title: Spatial Data and Mapping in R

When: 18th February 2026, 10am - 4pm

Location: Castle Suite, Lancaster Castle

Description: R has a powerful set of packages for working with geospatial data, including spatial data analysis, statistics, and cartography. This workshop will introduce the spatial data types to R users, demonstrate the GIS analysis functions, and show how to make publication-quality maps. Sample data and tasks will be supplied, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own data and problems.

This one-day workshop will take you through the analysis of spatial data in R, including data input, geographical data analysis, mapping, and cartographic output. If you have some skills with R, for example you can fit a linear model, and need to work with anything geographic, this workshop will help. We start from first principles of spatial data and finish with some practical examples from a variety of fields.

Students can choose one of the examples, but we encourage them to bring their own data which we may use in live coding exercises.
