Join our interactive online lecture on solar energy, and how we can best store this incredible fuel source.
Renewable energy supplies, most of all solar energy, exceed global consumption by a factor of more than 1000. Yet, moving to renewables – which are geographically dispersed, intermittent and captured as electrical energy – from concentrated, transportable fossil fuel chemical energy requires us to find new ways of storing renewable energy in batteries, as fuels, or by other means. While batteries look set to capture the personal transportation market, they may struggle to meet the demands of large vehicles, heavy industry and aviation. This interactive* talk will discuss conversion of solar energy into chemical fuels, by natural photosynthesis, and by both bio-inspired and other artificial photosynthetic approaches, including current work to implement renewable hydrogen at scale.
