Event Details

J.L. Austin (1911-1960) was a leading proponent of Ordinary Language philosophy, an approach that transformed philosophical thinking. Mark Rowe is the author of J. L. Austin Philosopher and D-Day Intelligence Officer and will be giving a talk on Austin’s Life and Importance.

This is a general introduction to J L Austin, and it will concentrate on three areas: his role as an Intelligence officer in World War Two (particularly his seminal contribution to the success of the D-Day landings); his development of speech-act theory; and his leadership of Oxford Ordinary Language Philosophy between 1945 and his tragically early death in 1960.
