The event will culminate in our Translation Masterclass, which will be led by award-winning literary translator Frank Wynne and esteemed publisher and editor Bill Swainson.

Translation Masterclass Speakers

Frank Wynne is a literary translator. He has translated over fifty works by French and Francophone authors including Michel Houellebecq, Boualem Sansal and Ahmadou Kourouma, and by Spanish and Latin American authors including Pablo Picasso, Tomás González and Arturo Perez-Reverte. His translations have earned him a number of awards, including the 2002 IMPAC Prize for Atomised by Michel Houellebecq, the 2005 Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, the 2008 Scott Moncrieff Prize. He was twice won the Premio Valle Inclán for Spanish translation, in 2012 for Kamchatka by Marcelo Figueras and again in 2014 for The Blue Hour by Alonso Cueto. His translation of Vernon Subutex was shortlisted for the Man Booker International 2018 and his translation of Animalia by Jean-Baptiste de Amo won the 2020 Republic of Consciousness prize. He is a three-time winner of the CWA International Dagger. Read more.

Bill Swainson is a publisher and editor with forty years’ experience in independent and mainstream publishing. He has edited the works of a wide range of writers including Mourid Barghouti, Javier Cercas, Paul Durcan, Al Gore, A.C. Grayling, Dermot Healy, Rachel Holmes, Elizabeth Kolbert, Amin Maalouf, Laurie Penny, Agnès Poirier, Jacqueline Rose, Boualem Sansal, Judith Schalansky, W.G. Sebald, Will Self, Juan Gabriel Vásquez, and Delphine de Vigan. He was Senior Commissioning Editor at Bloomsbury (2000-15) and previously worked at the Harvill Press, Fourth Estate, Allison & Busby, and John Calder Ltd. He is currently Consultant Editor at MacLehose Press, where Vásquez’s The Shape of the Ruins was shortlisted for the 2019 Man Booker International Prize for Fiction, and Editor-at-Large for Non-Fiction at Oneworld. In 2015, he was awarded an OBE for services to literary translation.

We welcome translation professionals, postgraduate translation students, final year undergraduates, academics and alumni to join the Translation Lancaster event. There is no fee to participate.
