Tilbury Douglas have been appointed by the University to undertake heavy excavation works to install new District Heating pipework that will improve the energy efficiency of the Ruskin and Pre-School Centre as part of a larger, campus-wide Carbon Reduction project.

The Library footpath will remain closed from July through to the beginning of October.

The installation of new pipework will begin in the underpass, routing up the grass banking to the pathway adjacent to the Library. From there, the contractors will continue along the pathway, before turning across the grassed area between the Library and The Ruskin, eventually crossing the Perimeter Road and finishing at the Pre-School.

The works are set to commence in July with contractors preparing for the works from June. The project expects to be completed by the start of October.

Noise Disruption

The excavation element of the works is unavoidably noisy and the project team expect high levels of noise to affect surrounding buildings, including The Library and all floors of University House as contractors excavate the Library pathway from the Perimeter Road, leading to Alexandra Square.

Please note: The service pathway that runs from Alexandra Square, adjacent to the Library, to the Perimeter Road will be closed for the duration of the project, including access to the cycle parking adjacent to the Underpass.

Cycle Parking

Please ensure that bicycles are removed from the cycle parking stands along the service pathway, next to the Library, are removed before the 24th June. At this point, the cycle parking stands are to be removed and any bikes left in the vicinity will be removed by Security.

Underpass Closure

A complete closure of the Underpass is required throughout August and into the first week of September. Bus routes will be affected so please ensure that you check our Underpass and road closure summer travel information: Underpass and road closures affecting campus travel this summer | Lancaster University

Motorcycle parking within the Underpass will be closed from the 15th July. Notices will be in place to give notice of the closure and any motorcycles left in the underpass thereafter may be removed by the Security team.

Bus services will be diverted to a temporary bus stop on Bowland Avenue, outside the Chaplaincy. Signage will be installed to direct bus users to the alterative location.

Road Closure

There is a planned closure of the Perimeter Road between the Ruskin and the Pre-School Centre at the beginning of September. The closure is expected to last around one week and will require a diversion around campus to South West Campus.

Bigforth Drive will remain open but people who wish to access LUMS, Engineering, LEC and the Pre-School should approach from South West Campus.

Future updates are available to staff via the staff intranet and any disruption will be communicated to students via the Student Portal in advance.
