Challenges, Enthusiasm, and Excellence: Before and Beyond the Covid-19 Pandemic

There is no doubt that the Covid-19 pandemic has had a transformative impact upon lives around the world. What remains to be seen, however, is what the future holds, and how we will all learn from the changes of the past 18 months. In this keynote lecture, Dr. Allison Hui reflects upon the importance of embracing our enthusiasm in the face of diverse challenges. Drawing upon examples from her social scientific research on leisure travel and migration, Dr. Hui identifies what we can learn from the things we are enthusiastic about in our everyday lives. She will then connect this to her teaching experience, highlighting how student excellence and creativity as researchers can be driven by diverse passions, and provides reasons to be optimistic about the future beyond this pandemic.

Dr. Allison Hui is a leading expert in the development and use of social theories of practice for analysing contemporary challenges related to consumption and research methodologies. In addition to co-editing prominent volumes on Demanding Energy and The Nexus of Practices, Dr. Hui has been dedicated to public engagement and dialogue through engagement with public events, blogs, radio, podcasts, and outreach work in her role as the Sociology Department Director of Student Engagement, Recruitment and Admissions.

Dr Susan Broughton will talk about the different subject areas that we offer across the Biosciences at Lancaster University. Her focus today will be on Biochemistry, Biomedicine and Biochemical Science, but we also offer Biology, Zoology and Ecology and Conservation undergraduate degrees. The talk will cover our teaching and facilities. Dr Chris Gaffney, Director of Admissions for Sports and Exercise, will then give an overview of our undergraduate BSc in Sports and Exercise Science. The programme is delivered from Lancaster Medical School, one of the few Sports and Exercise Science programmes to be delivered from a medical school setting in the UK. Academics impart their research experience from Premier League football, Olympic Sports, the Space Industry (NASA), and NHS settings to provide an exciting curricula for undergraduate students. This prepares them for careers working in elite sport or working to improve public health in workplace or clinical settings.

Following an overview of the Faculty’s departments and programmes by Dr Patrick Rebuschat, you will have the opportunity to find out more about employability within the arts and social sciences.

The session will also include an interactive Media and Cultural Studies taster session that will give insight into how we teach at Lancaster University. We will think specifically about recent stories involving the British royal family, from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s accounts of racist media coverage, to the report about how Princess Diana was coerced into the BBC Panorama interview, and how the media covered these stories in the midst of largely positive representations of royalty. We will use these examples to consider issues of media practice and media ethics in the ever-changing media landscape, and why it is important for students to combine practical skills with in-depth, critical theoretical thinking.

Dr Martin Steven will lead an interactive session that will give insight into how we teach Politics and International Relations at Lancaster University. The ‘mini’ lecture and seminar discussion will focus on European politics, with an attempt to show how students engage with issues and themes around the topic of ‘populism’ in the EU as well as critically analysing them.

Dr Munir is universally acknowledged to be one of the world's foremost authorities on viral zoonoses (diseases that can be transmitted to humans from animals). As an expert on viral transmission, virus pathobiology, viral antagonism of immune responses, and host factors that limit virus replication, Dr Munir has been an essential figure in helping to understand this coronavirus. Consequently, since the start of the pandemic in mid-March, Dr Munir has rarely been out of the news. He has been interviewed well over 200 times by news channels across the globe for his valued expertise and insight into the virus. In addition to his considerable media work, Dr Munir is a member of Expert Panels at the World Health Organisation, developed a rapid diagnostic device and has designed a viable vaccine strategy. If the University has one person that we might call the face of our Covid response, it is Dr Muhammad Munir. Dr Muhammad Munir will talk to us about his research in virology including his recent work in developing a nasal vaccine for Covid-19.
