On Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th October, Lancaster Library became a Fun Palace - a "university of the streets" - and we were there.

Fun Palaces popped up across the UK on the first weekend in October, finally fulfilling a vision of theatre director Joan Littlewood from 1961.

Her aim was to create a space that could be a "laboratory of fun", bringing art and science together. At Lancaster Library, the activities included a ukulele orchestra, geometric crochet and a bellydance workshop among many others.

Our contribution was a opportunity to meet two of our lecturers, Dr Bernd Schulze and Dr Derek Kitson, who specialise in the study of rigidity and flexibility. At our stall, the public could see models and have a go at making their own, as well as hearing from Bernd and Derek about the applications of this mathematics to many areas of modern life, including engineering, robotics, medicine and biochemistry.
