Join us for an insight into Environmental and Earth Sciences at Lancaster and what it is like to study with us in Lancaster Environment Centre, your home department. Find out more about your chosen degree, discuss any questions you may have with our current students and staff, and experience taster lectures and demonstrations in your subject.

Find out more about the home department and community you will become a part of within Lancaster Environment Centre from our Head of Department, Professor Phil Barker.
10:15am Environmental and Earth Sciences subject talk
Dr Amber Leeson, lead Admissions Tutor for Environmental and Earth Sciences will give an introduction to the degrees at Lancaster followed by questions and answers with staff, current students and recent alumni.
10:45am A day in the life of a current student and a short tour of the Department
10:55am Optional break or chat
Take the opportunity to have a short break or chat with other offer holders and current students.
11:15am Live taster lecture
  • From ice to the sea: What happens to glacier meltwater?
    Dr Amber Leeson introduces the concept of glacier hydrology and explains why and how vast rivers and lakes form on the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets each summer.
11:25am Demonstrations
  • Hazelrigg: Lancaster University’s on-site weather station
    Professor Oliver Wild hosts a virtual visit to Hazelrigg, where he describes how the meteorological parameters are measured, and discusses the importance of weather station records for climate studies.
  • Rocks: Our evidence for past environments
    Dr Yani Najman shows how we can explore rock samples to understand the geological history of an area; where have ancient volcanoes and mountain belts previously existed, and how have they disappeared.
